CCCAP Student Design Competition 2018

DESCRIPTION: A Visitor Center for Joshua Tree National Park, Twenty-Nine Palms, CA

The project is a Visitor Center for the Joshua Tree National Park in Twenty-nine Palms, California. The designs should communicate the significance of Joshua Tree National Park and the surrounding desert environment through the architectural form and the educational components of the exhibits. Successful designs will promote sustainability through materials and energy efficiency.

COMPETITION REGISTRATION:

Due to the enthusiastic response of CCCAP previous completions, we have revised the registration process.

Registration will be by school rather than by student and will include a fee for non-CCCAP members. The instructors will register their school during the registration period and will receive 3 entry numbers to distribute to their students. After registering you will receive access to additional information including detailed site documents to use in preparing your submissions

·                     Each school is limited to 3 entries.

·                     CCCAP members registration is free

·                     Non-Members registration is $50, for 3 entries.

 

COMPETITION ORGANIZERS: CCCAP, Inc

The Coalition of Community College Architecture Programs [CCCAP] is a non-profit 501(c)(3) membership association founded to advance the recognition of community college architecture programs. CCCAP members include community college architecture programs [i.e. CCAP], other schools of architecture, and corporate supporters.

There are over 120 CCAPs across the country. Since its’ first work session in 2012, the CCCAP has achieved 501(c)(3) status, collected data from 122 programs, applied for an NSF grant to research the impact of courses on sustainable design within architectural educational institutions, held national conferences in Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Austin. The Coalition has made presentations to the ACSA Administrators’ Conferences 2013 and 2014 as well as the ACSA National Conference 2014, and AIA National Convention 2015.

The CCCAP is committed:

·                     To establish transfer/articulation agreements between Architecture Programs in community colleges and schools of architecture,

·                     To increase the racial, gender, cultural, and socio-economic diversity within the architectural profession,

·                     To support dialogue, share best practices, and collaborate as a network among Architecture Programs in community colleges and architectural academic and accreditation institutions.

 

The Project:

A Visitor Center for the Joshua Tree National Park in Twenty-nine Palms, California.

 

The Site:

The approximately two-acre site is located within the Joshua Tree National Park in Twentynine Palms, California. Twenty-nine Palms is located within San Bernardino County, California.

 

The use and control of natural light to define the spaces and to facilitate the observation and educational space are of primary importance. The use and control of natural ventilation and sustainable materials are important. The spaces should:

 

▪    Convey an architectural statement reflecting the significance of the Joshua Tree National Park and the surrounding desert environment.

▪    Promote the educational mission of the Joshua Tree National Park and the National Parks Department.

▪    Incorporate natural light where appropriate as this is a critical component to the success of this project.

▪    Promote sustainability in the use of materials and energy.

▪    Include direct references to a Site Analysis that each participant will submit

▪    Include direct references to a Photographic Survey that each participant will develop.

 

The building and exterior spaces are to demonstrate to the highest degree possible the ability of architecture to respond to the unique needs of the users and the site. The designer must take into account the fragile nature of the site particularly, the existing flora and fauna.

 

The spaces are to demonstrate to the highest degree possible the ability of architecture to respond to the unique needs of the users and the site through the creation of space. In addition, the control of natural light and ventilation and its distribution are the most important design factors. The architecture must demonstrate this in a positive and meaningful way.

 

Program Requirements:

The following are minimum requirements that must be incorporated into your design:

▪                      Main Entry and Lobby: 200 sq. ft.

▪                      Information/Reception Desk Area: 100 sq. ft.

▪                      Educational Exhibit Space: 1500 sq. ft.

▪                      Park Ranger Offices: 2 @ 150 sq. ft. each=300 sq. ft.

▪                      Ranger Restrooms w/Showers: 2 @ approx 100 sq. ft. each = 200 sq. ft.

▪                      Computer Space for Video Wall& Pedestal Control: 100 sq. ft.

▪                      Custodial Space: 50 sq. ft.

▪                      Storage Space: 150 sq. ft.

▪                      Unisex Visitors Restrooms: 2 @ approx 50 sq. ft. each=100 sq.ft.

▪                      Shower Rooms: 4 @ approx25 sq. ft. each=100 sq. ft.

▪                      Refreshment Space: 150 sq. ft.

▪                      Mechanical Space: 100 sq. ft.

▪                      Electrical Space: 100 sq. ft.

 

Total Enclosed Square Footage                                                           3150 sq. ft.

§  Shaded Exterior Open Space(s) for Visitors: 1000 sq. ft.

§  Exterior Equipment Yard: 500 sq. ft.

Main Entry and Lobby

The total area of the Main Entry/Lobby Area is approximately 200 sq. ft. The Main Entry and Lobby should serve as the public entrance to your building and spatially direct people towards areas of interest.

 

The Information/Reception Desk Area:

The total area of the Reception Desk Area is approximately 100 sq. ft. The

Reception Desk Area will accommodate 1 assistant.

 

The Educational Exhibit Space:

The total area of the Educational Exhibit Space is approximately 2000 sq. ft. This space will be used to introduce visitors to a contextual topic of the Joshua Tree National Park and surrounding desert environment as chosen by student. Examples are: the flora and fauna, history, geology, climbing culture, etc.

 

▪     Flora is defined as follows: All the plants that live in a particular area, time, period, or environment.

▪     Fauna is defined as follows: The animals of a particular region, habitat, or geological period.

 

Consider bench seating in this space for those visitors that wish to sit during the video wall presentation (see Architectural Video Wall information below).

 

Rangers Offices:

The total area of the Offices for the Park Rangers is approximately 300 sq. ft. Each Office Space will accommodate 1 Park Ranger. The offices may be detached from the main space.

 

Rangers Restrooms:

The total area of the Restrooms for Park Rangers is approximately 100 sq. ft. each. The 100 sq. ft. listed above is based on providing one, unisex handicapped accessible restroom with a shower. The Restrooms may be detached from the main space, but must be directly related to the Offices for the Park Rangers.

 

The Refreshment Space:

The total area of the Refreshment Space is approximately 150 sq. ft. The Refreshment Space will accommodate 1 person. There should be a counter for service and back counter for cabinets, equipment, etc.

 

Water Station:

There must be a free water station accessible to visitors near or adjacent to the

Refreshment Space.

 

Restrooms:

The total area of the Restrooms is approximately 50 sq. ft. each.  The 50 sq.  ft. listed above is based on providing one, unisex handicapped accessible Restroom. The Restrooms may be detached from the main space.

 

Showers for Visitors:

The total area of each shower is approximately 25 sq. ft. resulting in a total of approximately 100 sq. ft. allocated for visitor showers. These should  be located in reasonable proximity to visitor restrooms.

 

Custodial Space:

The total area of the Custodial Space is approximately 50 sq.  ft.  The Custodial Space may be detached from the main space and should be directly related to the Restroom.

 

Storage Space:

The total area of the Storage is approximately 150 sq. ft. This area must have cabinets and shelving for general storage.

 

Parking:

Parking for 16 visitors and 2 dedicated spaces for the Park Rangers must be provided. San Bernardino County Parking Layouts have been included for your use.

 

Exiting and ADA Issues:

Exiting is an essential part of this design problem. The major exhibit space must have a minimum of two fire exits. Students are required to take into account additional ADA issues such as clearances, door clearances, etc.

 

The Architectural Video Wall and Pedestal Displays:

The Architectural Video Wall is a component or components that will occupy wall space within the Educational Exhibit Space. This Architectural Video Wall will be utilized to introduce visitors to the history, flora, fauna geology and rock climbing of the Joshua Tree National Park and surrounding desert environment. The National Park Service has been working with the Planar Company who have graciously donated the Architectural Video Wall system. You must allocate clear wall space of approximately 10’-0” in height by 20’-0” in length to accommodate the digital display. Information regarding this system has been included for your use.

 

In addition, there will be 6 pedestal displays with touch screens. These will also be donated by the Planar Company. These displays will allow visitors to search for specific items related to the flora and fauna of the Joshua Tree National Park and surrounding desert environment. Information regarding this system has been included for your use

 

 

Miscellaneous:

▪                      You must include direct references a Site Analysis.    You must do this graphically.

▪                      You must include direct references to the Photographic Survey.   You must do this graphically.

▪                      There are no height limits.

▪                      There are no setbacks required.

Submittal Requirements:

(Submissions that do not conform to these requirements will not be accepted.) Miscellaneous requirements

1.                  A single digital file of two, 24”x36” design panels, portrait direction only

2.                  File format & size: File must be *.pdf and less than 20MB.

3.                  Official language is English.

4.                  Personal information that includes applicant's identification should not be included in submittal. Only the title and the registration number should be specified on the design panel page.

5.                  Registration number – to be provided after the completed registration is received.

 

Design Panel requirements (include graphic scale on all scale images)

1.                  Project Description Document (maximum 500 words) which explains the visitor center theme and design concept. Provide an adequate description of the approach taken in both the design process and the execution of your proposal.

Note: Scale of all drawings and model are at the discretion of the student.

 

Submission Process

Projects will be submitted through Submittal.com, a digital exchange system. You will receive an email after your registration has been received with instructions for using the system.

Other

1.                  Works submitted to other competitions or plagiarized are eliminated from judging. Even if such works win a prize, the prize will be revoked later.

2.                  Submissions that do not comply with competition rules or formats might be placed at a disadvantage during judging.

The organizer retains the right to publish, reproduce, distribute, and hold exhibitions regarding winning entries to the competition
